on books and such

i have written many times, that books saved my life. and still, today, i believe this to be true.
my memories easily take me, to the neighborhood i grew up in. an upstairs flat, where my family lived. a bedroom of my own, with pale colored walls, and a window that faced the street. this window, where cold air seeped through, it's raggedy ass shade, that swung back and forth, to the tune of the wind. to me this little corner, was my castle, high in the sky, piled with blankets.
and surely, i had to be the princess, of this castle ; )

outside this window, the ghetto and it's street life, grew strong. education or a way through these streets, grew weak. somewhere along the way, i had to find my weapon of choice. books helped me find my way, they allowed me to travel, anywhere in the world.
i'd sit for hours in this corner of mine, and read. it's where great books like nancy drewand the box car children, could hold me, for only so long. i longed to sneak through pages, with a flash light and find out...
why a caged bird sings
who this native son was
i remember the night i cried myself to sleep, in my castle, while following malcolm x, on his pilgrimage and reading his words-
"in my 39 years on this earth The Holy City Of Mecca had been the first time i stood in front of The Holy Creator Of All and felt like a human being."

just a few books that i love~

to kill mocking bird by harper lee
down these mean streets - piri thomas
fall on your knees by anne- marie mcdonald
in the time of butterflies- julia alverez
einstein's dreams- alan lightman
the prisoners wife - asha bandele
a hungry heart - gordon parks
bird by bird - anne lamott
the autobiography of malcolm x- alex haley
the red tent - diane diamont
the giver - lowis lowry
boricuas: influential puerto rican writings- roberto santiago
the brooklyn follies - paul auster
through painted deserts - donald miller
catcher in the rye - j.d. salinger *
pride and prejudist - jane austen *
jayne eyre - charlotte bronte *
the boxcar children - gurtrude chandler warner
gift of the sea - anne morrow lindbergh
invisible man- ralph ellison
wind, sand and stars- antoine de saint exupury
the crying heart tatoo- david martin

reeve lindbergh once wrote, of her mother, anne morrow lindbergh's book-
"at whatever point one opens gift from the sea, to any chapter or page, the author's words offer a chance to breathe and live more slowly. the book makes it possible to quiet down and rest in the present, no matter what the circumstances may be. just to read it- a little bit of it or in it's entirety- it is to exist for a while in a different and more peaceful tempo."

xo
happy days my friends. i am enjoying a bit of a spring break, with the kiddos. shuffling around the house, enjoying the moments.
you are loved~

* books the sweetest boy in the world, gave me as a young girl. i am so glad i grew up and married this sweetheart. ; )

antoine de saint exupury's 'Little Prince' didn't make the list? Hmmm...You have many titles I haven't read yet. Time to hit the library again!

I started reading a book last night that is tickling me, "The Sugar Queen" by Sarah Addison Allen. One of the characters is 'hounded by books that inexplicably appear whenever she needs them'. A book lover's dream.

Books are such treasures, specially when they help you to create a "parallel" reality, one that better suits your soul. Great post, thank you for the book list, enjoy your week, Christina :-)

Wonderful post :) Yes books are such a treasure indeed, they also have saved my life and still do. Even though I really don't read novels very often, I read all the time. What I look for on a book instead of taking me from real life into anouther country, society, etc, I look for me in a book, I look for people with whoom I have something in common...I think I'll write about this on my blog soon and I'll make my list too. This is a wonderful subject, thanks Christina :) Have a wonderful day and vacation !

Books also saved me thru the many phases of my life, and because of our love for books, we have traveled all over the world thru many eras and lives. I remember the first time I finished a whole "big" book by myself, I was the proudest girl in the whole world. Your list has quite a few that are on my fave list too, it seems right to me...

When my kids were little, I wanted to make sure they knew how to read at an early age, as reading has meant everything to me in my life, and like their mama - they are avid readers and that makes me so proud!

Enjoy your time with your kids, sweet girl - you have been missed by me! xxoo :)

This post brought back so many memories. I was such a shy nerd, always reading and going to the school library on my recess breaks--anything to get away from the bullies and hair pulling and escape the red-necked town where I lived. Your list of books, so many of them on my own list of favorites and life-changers makes me remember so many things. Thank you for this post!

Books are my treasure and escape as an adult, but as a child I didn't have many books. I would sneak away on my bike to the library occasionally and bring home books on strong women, they fascinated me. I loved magazines as they open worlds too. For Christmas this past year I gave one of my favorite books to my daughter, Gift of the Sea. My copy is worn and falling apart, but I love it. I hope she loves it too.

Funny that you've written this today, as I was just looking at your very lovely/inspirational post about words/books on Relyn's blog . . . from 2009!

I've read most of the books on your list and I know them to be good; as for the others, they are going straight on my to-read list! (I read Gift from the Sea almost every year. Its wisdom never fails to impress itself upon me.)

"Fall on your knees"...what a powerful book. I consider it a fave too although very dark subject matter.
I just picked up Pride & Prejudice I want to see what the fuss is all about! :)
Thanks for the reminder that books are the best escape. xoxo

This post so resonates with me. I have a pile of childhood books including Nancy Drew on my shelf, that I can't throw out because I am transported when I look at them. I've been meaning to write a post about them :) The magic of books ...

Oh my gosh Christina! I LOVED the Boxcar Children! I was just telling my husband about that series last week. JD Salinger, another one of my favs. What's gift of the sea? The title sounds interesting, since I am drawn to the ocean. I will have to look that one up. In fact, I will have to look at all of these...great list!

Gift from the Sea is also one of my fave books Christina. It's a classic and one you can pick up time and time again and find something new every time that you may have missed in your last read through. As always, beautiful photos.

You have a beautiful way with words. "outside this window, the ghetto and it's street life, grew strong. education or a way through these streets, grew weak."

Poignant.

I, too, love Gift of the Sea. One of my favourites.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm finding so many lovely new ones...I think we'll chat again.
