Isn't this photo absolutely beautiful?? I sound like a proud mumma, don't I? My daughter, took this photo. She is going through the most beautiful part of photography~ the seeing part. Catching the details, the light, the beauty... She is 13, and she takes my breath away.
I was wondering if you could help me, with a photography question. The other day, I went to load a few pictures on line( to be printed) and the crop box that was on the site, was cutting the sides and tops of my photos off.
What am I doing wrong? Should I have left more space, when shooting the photo? Is my file, too big? Did this ever happen, to any of you? It has me curious, as to how I can solve, this mystery. Maybe, you can help. ; )
It's pouring rain here today. It makes for the most wonderful, lazy reading day.
How are you?
Peace~

So proud of her!! So talented.
the same thing happened to me when i ordered my photos from snapfish. thought it was me. lemme know the answer when you figure it out. lol.
xo
oh, i hope someone, can help us, Se'lah. ; )
As to photo question, I have seen where the developer has claimed that a digital photo has different aspect ratios (something like 4:3) than traditional cropping measurements like 4x6, 5x7, etc. So, yes, I have left extra room in the photo and tried to see what I could expect in their preview mode. You may also want to ask your developer if you should be cropping with your software or with theirs. Could make a difference. I hope that helps a bit.
As to your daughter's photo: fantastic! I know I am looking at stone stairs, but I get the sense of a waterfall instead. Doesn't perspective rock? (no pun intended!)
Christina - I don't know if this helps or not, but I am co-owner of a photography lab, so will give it a shot. We don't do online stuff, but I assume the same is true online as in person. Depending on the size print you order, you will probably see cropping occur. My digital camera shoots a 4x6 format - if I were to order 4x6s or prints with the same format (such as 8x12s) I wouldn't lose much of the picture. However if I were to order an 8x10 (which is a 4x5 format) I would lose quite a bit of the image. The same is true of 5x7s - you will lose even more of the image on the long side because it's a skinnier crop.
Is that the kind of thing that was happening? Back when we still dealt wiith film, all photographers were given "crop cards" with the different cropping lines indicated & they would tape the negatives to the cards.
Any help?
:) Debi
PS - And apparently not all cameras are the same. My phone camera shoots a 4-1/2 x 6 format. You have to, as Cyndy said, allow room for the cropping - you need to know if it's gonna be horizontal & vertical & allow extra wherever you need. The professional photographers I work with sometimes make a guide and tape it to their viewfinder to help.
Good luck!
it's pouring rain here too. its dark. the kids are in bed and i am planning on curling up with a good book in bed.
she has a beautiful eye for sure.
are you shooting with canon or nikon, as the aspect ratios are different (slightly). Deb says the same thing I've learned too. What you can do, it one of two things - most places will print 8x12 as opposed to 8x10 which is a standard size in printing. Now, where the problem lies is in framing as that is not a standard frame size. So you have to either crop the shot to fit the frame....or have a custom mat cut and then use an 11x14 frame.
hope that helps.
This happened to me too, and I had to go in and resize and crop my photos to whatever their printing size was (I think I used snapfish). I hated to do that.
char* Canon.
You all are helping me so much.
Thank you, thank you. The more comments the better.
i crop my photos when editing, before printing, keeping within the 4x6 constraints...
when I test print my colors at walgreens, they will tell me before my order is processed if any of my photos fall outside the 4x6 size and I can then choose to lose some of my photo or they will crop it at 4 x something to keep the photo in tact {this is all online}
are you cropping your own photos before they are being processed ?
Beautiful photo. Talented girl.
what everyone else said.
I would love to know when you figger it out.
btw--can you ask the question in google? I always find forums with answers for my questions that way.
She has a good eye, that one!
It's probably your aspect ratio... this happened even back in film days - 35mm film doesn't perfectly fill, e.g. an 8x10 print.
Her are your options: Print the entire file and leave a border on the paper which you can trim when you print it. Or crop the file to the same aspect ratio.
Hope this makes sense, it's always difficult to write about something so visual!
And, yes, your daughter has a really good eye! No wonder you're proud!!
I love your daughters photo ~ the sense of movement and yet one knows it is still ~ just beautiful!!
A dreary rainy book day . . . . mmmm love those!!
Sounds like everyone explained it pretty well. I have done as Char says, and had a custom matte made for an 8" X 12" photo in an 11" X 14" frame... it can get to be expensive, though...
And you are right to be a proud momma -- your daughter has a good eye! :)
that is a great shot... she has a good eye, and that's the first step in capturing great images :)
enjoy the rainy day, i wouldn't mind one right about now.
oh yes..you can be a proud mamma Christina!
she's got a very good eye..yes that little one is promising!
so sorry i can't help you about this cropping thing...hope you solve it !

Your daughters photo is beautiful! I am enjoying reading everyone's comments, as I also have so much to learn. Thanks for asking the question.
Hi! oh i did so just spy my name in porches for the soul by sheer accident!!! (she jumps for joy) :) i love that they are porches, its lovely an imagery!!!
& also a huge & lovely high 5 for your talented daughter, that picture is amazing!!!
magnificent wishes
Christina, i just go into my printer settings and change my preferences there...but I am not bigtime photographers like you guys! I love your daughters photo, she has a good eye. and you have every reason to be proud. take care.
I see the talent runs in the family.
Beautiful photo! My daughter took the photo of me on my site today...a budding photog herself.
Looks like your question was answered. I know when I play around with my photos I do "free form cropping" which means I don't really properly measure. So if I want to print I have to re-crop to a proper dimension. I hate when that happens...
Of course you are proud the picture is beautiful.
Please tell your 13 year old photographer that she captured light.
Love Renee xoxo
When I went to Snapfish to have photos printed, they gave me an option to either have them crop the photos to a traditional size, or print them as they were uploaded. I chose to print them as they were uploaded, but the prints are not the standard 4 x 6, they are a little smaller. Here is a link to an explanation:

And, the photo is beautiful! (I have a 13 year old daughter, too!)
Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as my grandmother used to say! Your daughter did a great job; no doubt she was inspired by her teacher's awesome talent! :) xoxox
thank you all so very much, for your comments and suggestions. you all have been so kind. i appreciate the emailing back and forth to get an understanding of this photog thing.
xoxo
Beautiful shot. Your daughter is...well, your daughter!
absoluetely beautiful. And she's only 13 ...
my 4x6s don't crop, but everything else does. a friend explained that it's the aspect ratio. (i was bothered by the fact that it crops more for 8x10 than it does for 5x7 - i mean, 8x10 is bigger, how on earth does that work.) i did discover that there is no cropping on 20x30 - that has the same aspect ratio. i guess i'll have to order all 20x30 prints from now on! LOL
Hello
I came here, via your reply on Maddies blog and I am so glad I did. Your daughter is very talented, this is a great photograph.
soulful part deux certainly has paid attention to what her mama has been showing her! lovely, lovely shot. And ah...rain, I've been wishing for that smell...enjoy your day sugar! smooches
Lubna* oh sweetheart, thank you for coming to visit. this makes me smile.
; )
Even when I size my photos exactly 6 x 4 inch they still get cropped. I have inquired with a few printing places as I utilize the full frame when shooting and can't afford any croping.
Apparently the printing machine don't print exactly 6 x 4 and this is about .5cm's crop that occurs on each side but nothing can really be done.
Sizing your photos to the correct size before you print does help a little and so does selecting the "Do not Crop" function on the printing machine if it has one.
Lots of good feedback here already... So I will only add that your daughter has a great gift for seeing already... Such fun she has ahead! Happy weekend to you all :o) ((HUGS))
Your daughter has taken a great photo. Your gift for photography is rubbing off on her. We've had rain the last two days off and on. Today it was sunny and cool.
This photograph is breath taking - absolutely gorgeous! Give her a big hug from me, I'm proud of her.
Sorry I can't help, but I wanted to tell you that your daughter is gonna be just like you.
Hi! I was doing some random blog hopping this morning and found yours. Great photos (you and your daughter!)
I have my photos printed at Walgreens, and they use a format called True Digital. Digital cameras have a 4:3 ratio as mentioned by others, and so the actual photo is 4" x 5.3". Has to do with the sensor inside the camera. Hope that helps!
uh..um, beautiful? amazingly, beautifully, fantastic is more like it!
you should be *very* proud!
hope you figured out the photo mystery- it is good to be here christine. hope you have been well.
